The Curated Critique seeks to emulate the style of high-quality, rigorous, and open artistic development found in higher-ed arts education. The critique is a space for developing ideas that need a further push or ideas fit to be developed. Limited to 10 participants, accepted artists need not have exhibited previously but must show an ability to discuss their work and have that work be of a high standard, as determined by the Critique Admission Panel. All artistic mediums will be accepted, but accepted artists may reflect the mediums the facilitator is most able to critique. Additionally, accepted artists will be chosen for their ability to critique and be critiqued constructively. All accepted artists will sign a code of conduct, which reflects honesty, rigor, kindness, and accountability.
While AMCAC is searching for its permanent home, critique sessions will take place via Zoom, 2.5 hours per week, for 8 weeks. Due to the virtual format, artists are encouraged to present and propose works that are readily displayable remotely. While on Zoom, the Curated Critique is offered at a discounted rate of 250.00 USD per person. There is an application fee of $10.00 USD per person. All critique sessions will be conducted in English.

Critique Code of Conduct
In critique…
What’s here is here: Unless we get permission from each other, discussions here are confidential.
Come prepared: We move our work forward every week as our greater lives allow. We understand that preparation is respect.
Speak up: We endeavor to comment on our fellow participants' work well. We understand that critique is about giving and receiving.
Respect: A strong critique means we will disagree. We will disagree respectively, push back when needed, and remember we are here to grow together.
Honor and push: We offer constructive feedback and suggest how to move a work/body of work forward. We do not denigrate, and we do not do “empty praise” - we give examples.
Remember the clock: Our time is limited, and we use it equitably.
Assume good intent: We assume the best intentions from each other and respond with that mindset.
Say what we need: If something is not working for us, we speak up. We understand that shortchanging ourselves ultimately shortchanges the group.
Build community: Our critique community does not need to end at eight weeks. We endeavor to build lasting relationships with each other.
The facilitator facilitates: We agree to follow any rules set by our facilitator, unless they violate the above.
Critique Admission Panel
Is it you?
As AMCAC is still growing, we are searching for the third member of our Critique Admission Panel. Are you a practicing artist with experience jurying? Send us an email.
Phil Garber
Phil Garber is the founder and director of AMCAC. He is a conceptual artist, working most heavily in sculpture and lens-based mediums. His practice and life are deeply informed by the fact that he is a person who stutters.
The third member of the Critique Admission Panel is always your critique facilitator. No advantage will be given to artists invited to apply by the facilitator or those who otherwise have a relationship with the facilitator.
